ALLERGENS
Fish, Egg, Wheat

By 9 months, most babies are getting confident with finger foods they can pick up and gnaw on themselves. These fish fingers start with Atlantic Wild White Cod — a mild, snow-white fillet that's easy for little ones to take to — cut into strips sized for baby's grip, rolled in a light oat crumb, and baked until golden. No frying, no added salt: just crisp-outside, soft-inside cod that's just as happy on the grown-ups' plate with a squeeze of lemon or a dip on the side.

Ingredients

Main
Crumb coating
  • Egg (lightly beaten, for the crumb to stick)1
  • Plain flour (light dusting before the egg wash)2 tbsp
  • Rolled oats (blitzed into a coarse crumb, or fine breadcrumbs)1/3 cup
  • Olive oil (brushed over the crumb before baking, for crispness)1 tsp
  • Dried parsley (optional, for aroma)a pinch
  • Dip or sauce (optional, e.g. plain yoghurt or ketchup, for adults / 1y+ at the table)to serve

The 3-step crumb coat

1Flour
2Egg wash
3Oat crumb

Method

  1. Prep the codPat the cod fillet dry and run your fingers over it to check carefully for any pin bones. Cut into finger-length strips sized for baby's grip, about 1 cm thick.
  2. Set up the crumb stationLay out three shallow bowls: plain flour, the beaten egg, and the oat crumb.
  3. Coat each stripDust each cod strip lightly in flour, dip in egg, then press into the oat crumb until evenly coated on all sides.
  4. Bake until cooked throughArrange on a lined tray, lightly brush with olive oil, and bake at 200°C (400°F) for 12–15 minutes, turning halfway, until the cod is cooked fully through — opaque, flakes easily, with no translucent or raw centre — and the crumb is golden.
  5. Cool & serveCool to just warm and double-check a strip is flaked through with no raw centre before serving. Adults can add a dip or sauce at the table. Introduce one new food at a time and watch for 2–3 days.

Safety notes

  • Cook the cod fully through — opaque all the way through, flakes easily, no translucent or raw centre, and the crumb baked golden. Never serve an underdone strip.
  • Check for pin bones before cutting — run your fingers over the fillet and remove every one, even with premium fillets.
  • Allergens: fish, egg and wheat/gluten (from the flour and crumb). If any is new to baby, introduce one new food at a time and watch for 2–3 days for any reaction.
  • No added salt, sugar or honey under 1. Keep the oat crumb plain — skip pre-seasoned breadcrumb mixes.
  • Dips, sauces and seasoning are for adults / 1y+ only: set aside baby's plain strips first, then season or dip the grown-ups' portion at the table.
  • Cut into finger-length strips sized for baby's own grip and serve warm — baby seated upright and supervised.

Why it's great for baby

Atlantic Wild White Cod is a mild, low-fat white fish that's gentle on a growing digestive system, offering lean protein plus vitamin B12 and iodine to support baby's energy and development. Baking instead of frying keeps the coating light while still delivering the crisp texture babies enjoy biting into. The oat crumb adds a little extra fibre and a satisfying crunchy-soft contrast, and cut into finger-length strips, it's an ideal shape for baby to hold, gnaw, and practise self-feeding.

Tips

Batch & freeze: crumb a double batch, freeze the uncoated strips on a tray, then bag them once solid. Bake straight from frozen, adding a few extra minutes — always check they're cooked fully through before serving.

Share with adults: set aside baby's plain strips first, then season the grown-ups' batch with salt and serve with a dip or squeeze of lemon at the table — one tray, two ways.

Texture by age: for younger or newer eaters, cut the strips a little thicker and bake until just done for a softer bite; for older babies, bake a touch longer for extra crunch they can bite through easily.
