Chicken congee is a cornerstone of Cantonese baby feeding — generations of Hong Kong families have relied on it to nourish babies through every weaning milestone. This version uses hormone-free chicken thigh from New Zealand for the richest, most flavourful result.

Colourful carrot and zucchini add beta-carotene, extra vitamins, and gentle texture — making this a true mini-meal that covers protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables in one warm bowl.

🍚
Jasmine Rice
40g, uncooked
🥕
Carrot
40g, finely diced
🥒
Zucchini
¼ piece, finely diced

Makes approx. 2 baby servings. Freeze extras in a covered container for up to 1 month.

How to Make

1
Cook Congee

Rinse jasmine rice and simmer in 500ml of water over low heat for 20–25 minutes, stirring often, until the rice breaks down into thick, creamy congee.

2
Steam Chicken

Steam chicken thigh for 15 minutes until fully cooked through with no pink remaining inside.

3
Prepare

Shred chicken finely and remove any cartilage. Stir diced carrot and zucchini into the congee and simmer for a further 5 minutes until vegetables are completely soft.

4
Combine & Serve

Stir shredded chicken into the congee. Add a little water to adjust consistency if needed. Cool to a safe temperature and serve warm. Freeze leftovers in a covered container for up to 1 month.

A Complete Baby Meal

This congee ticks every box: iron-rich protein, complex carbohydrates, and colourful vegetables — everything a 10-month-old needs in one warm, comforting bowl.

🩸
Heme Iron
Dark chicken meat delivers the most bioavailable form of iron — essential for preventing anaemia during rapid brain and body development.
🥕
Beta-Carotene
Carrot's orange pigment converts to Vitamin A — key for vision and immune health.
🍚
Sustained Energy
Rice congee provides slow-release energy to fuel a busy, crawling baby.
🛡️
Zinc
Chicken is one of the best food sources of zinc — the mineral that powers your baby's immune system and supports healthy growth and wound healing.

Tips for Parents

Texture Progress

Shred chicken finely at 10 months for soft, manageable pieces. By 12 months, you can leave slightly larger shreds to build chewing skills.

Vegetable Swaps

This recipe is very adaptable — swap carrot and zucchini for corn, peas, spinach, or any soft vegetable your baby has already tried. The chicken and rice base stays the same.

Storage

Cool completely before freezing in a covered container. The congee will thicken when frozen — add a splash of water when reheating and stir well.

No Salt or Soy Sauce

Do not add salt or soy sauce to baby congee under 12 months. The natural umami of chicken and the sweetness of the vegetables provide all the flavour needed.
