Baby Potato & Salmon Waffles (Baby · 9 months+)
Baby Potato & Salmon Waffles
Norway salmon × soft potato mash, baked into golden finger waffles — omega-3s for brain development, made for baby to grip and self-feed 🧇
Want something baby can grip and self-feed that also supports their growing brain? These potato and salmon waffles are just the thing. Norway Wild Caught Salmon is folded into soft mashed potato with egg and a little baby cheese, then baked in a waffle maker — crisp outside, soft inside, golden all over. The waffle grooves are perfect for little hands to grab, so it's a one-bite finger food packed with protein and energy, while the salmon's omega-3s help support brain development. Adults can enjoy them at breakfast with a side salad too.
Ingredients
- Potato (small, steamed until tender)1
- Steamed Norway Wild Caught SalmonShop ↗1 portion
- Unsalted butter10g
- Cornstarch (depends on potato size)20–40g
- Beaten egg (about 1–2 tbsp)1/2
- Finely chopped spring onion (optional)1 tsp
- Grated baby cheese (optional)1 tbsp
- Baby-friendly oil (for the waffle maker)a little
Method
- Prepare potato mashWhile the steamed potato is still hot, add the butter and mash together. You can leave some small lumps for texture.
- Combine ingredientsAdd the cornstarch, half of the beaten egg, and the optional spring onion and baby cheese.
- Add salmonFlake the steamed salmon into the bowl. The salmon must be cooked through, no pink, flaking easily, and carefully check for and remove any small bones.
- Mix to a batterStir all ingredients together until well combined. The mixture will be a thick batter.
- Cook the wafflesPreheat and lightly grease the waffle maker with a little oil. Spoon in the potato mixture and spread it out. Cook for 10–15 minutes, until golden, baked through, centre no wet batter and the egg fully set. Every machine is different, so check halfway through and flip if needed for even cooking. Cool to lukewarm before serving baby.
Safety notes
- Cook the salmon and egg fully — salmon cooked through, no pink, flaking easily; egg fully set, waffles baked through and golden, centre no wet batter.
- Remove all bones. Check the salmon carefully with your fingers before mixing to make sure no small bones remain.
- Allergens: fish (salmon), egg. If this is a first introduction, introduce one new food at a time and watch for 2–3 days.
- No added salt, sugar or honey under 1. The salmon and potato are naturally savoury — no added salt needed.
- Seasoning for adults / 1y+ only: set aside baby's portion before adding any salt or sauce to your own.
- Cut the waffles into easy-to-hold strips or small pieces, serve warm, with baby seated and supervised.
Why it's great for baby
Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids — its DHA is especially important for baby's brain and vision development — plus easily absorbed protein. Potato provides starch and energy and mashes soft and smooth. Egg binds the batter while adding protein and choline. Baked into a waffle shape, crisp outside and soft inside, it's just right for a 9-month-old's hands to grip — a great helper for baby-led weaning (BLW).
Tips
Batch ahead: bake a few extra, cool and freeze in a sealed container; reheat in the oven or toaster to crisp them back up for easy days.
Adjust texture by age: for younger babies, cut the waffles into thin strips for easy gripping; for older babies, cut into small pieces to practise picking up.
Share with adults: from the same batter, the grown-ups' portion can be seasoned with salt and black pepper, then served with salad or avocado.
