Vietnam tiger prawns are celebrated for their naturally sweet, meaty flavour — a result of the warm, clean coastal waters they're raised in. When gently cooked into congee, they release their natural sweetness into the broth, creating a deeply flavourful base that's warming and comforting in equal measure.

Sweet potato is the ideal base — its natural sugars and beta-carotene complement the prawn's oceanic sweetness, while its starchy richness gives the congee a beautiful, golden colour. Added in the final moments, the prawns stay tender and flavourful throughout.

🍚
Short-Grain White Rice
3 tbsp, rinsed
🍠
Sweet Potato
80g, finely diced
💧
Water
320ml

Makes approx. 1–2 baby servings. Do not freeze once prawns are cooked — refrigerate and consume within 24 hours.

How to Make

1
Cook Congee & Sweet Potato

Rinse rice and add to saucepan with diced sweet potato and 320ml water. Bring to simmer, cover, and cook on low heat for 25 minutes until silky congee forms and sweet potato is completely tender.

2
Prepare Prawns

Thaw prawns if frozen. Peel and slice each prawn into 3–4 pieces for quick, even cooking in the congee.

3
Add Prawns

Stir sliced prawns into the hot congee. Cook on low heat for 2–3 minutes until prawns are fully pink and opaque throughout. The prawn sweetness infuses the entire congee instantly.

4
Cool & Serve

Cool to a safe temperature. Serve 3–4 tablespoons. Refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Do not refreeze once prawns are cooked.

Why Tiger Prawn + Sweet Potato Congee?

Tiger prawn's natural ocean sweetness paired with sweet potato's beta-carotene creates a bowl that's warming, nourishing, and beautifully coloured. The congee base is naturally comforting — a classic format that babies instinctively accept — while the prawn delivers zinc and iodine in every serving.

🦐
Sweet Ocean Protein
Vietnam tiger prawns release their natural sweetness into the congee as they cook, infusing the entire bowl with a delicate, clean ocean flavour. The prawn itself stays tender — naturally sweet and far more flavourful than common prawns.
🍠
Beta-Carotene
Sweet potato is one of the richest sources of beta-carotene — the Vitamin A precursor that supports vision, immune function, and skin health. Its natural sweetness makes the congee irresistible to babies.
🛡️
Zinc & Iodine
Tiger prawns are an excellent source of zinc for immune development and iodine for brain and thyroid health — two minerals often under-represented in first-year weaning diets.
🍚
Congee Comfort
Congee is one of the most universally accepted baby foods across Asian cultures — the silky texture is easy to eat, gentle on digestion, and naturally warming. A format babies instinctively embrace from the very first bowl.

Tips for Parents

Shellfish Allergen — Read First

Shellfish is one of the most common food allergens. Introduce prawn for the first time as a standalone meal. Give a small amount (1–2 teaspoons) and wait 3 full days before introducing any other new foods. Watch for hives, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. If your baby has a family history of seafood or shellfish allergy, consult your paediatrician before introducing.

Add Prawns Last

Always add prawns in the final 2–3 minutes — never at the start. Prawns cook in minutes and become rubbery if overcooked. When they turn from grey to fully pink and opaque, they're perfectly done. The congee will be infused with their natural sweetness immediately.

Storage

Vacuum-sealed prawns: best consumed within 3 months frozen. Thaw in the fridge overnight. Once cooked, do not refreeze prawn congee. Refrigerate and consume within 24 hours — prawn texture degrades significantly after freezing and reheating.

No Salt Needed

Tiger prawn's natural mild salinity and the natural sweetness of sweet potato create a completely self-seasoned congee. No added salt is required or recommended — this bowl is genuinely delicious as it is.
