Around 7 months, babies benefit enormously from iron-rich meat — and hormone-free chicken thigh is one of the gentlest, most flavourful first meats you can offer. The dark meat is naturally juicier and richer in iron than breast, and blends to a beautifully smooth texture.

Paired with naturally sweet potato, this purée delivers a satisfying, well-rounded first meat meal that parents feel confident about and babies consistently enjoy.

🍠
Sweet Potato
80g, peeled & diced
🍼
Breast Milk or Formula
2–3 tbsp, to blend

Makes approx. 2 baby servings. Freeze extras in ice cube trays for up to 1 month.

How to Make

1
Steam

Place diced sweet potato and the chicken thigh in a steamer basket. Steam over medium heat for 15–18 minutes until sweet potato is tender and the chicken is fully cooked through with no pink remaining inside.

2
Prepare Chicken

Remove the chicken thigh and shred or cut into smaller pieces. Check carefully for and remove any cartilage, tendons, or tough fibrous pieces before blending.

3
Blend

Blend chicken and sweet potato together, adding breast milk, formula, or cooled boiled water one tablespoon at a time. Blend thoroughly — chicken may require a little more liquid than fish to reach a smooth consistency.

4
Cool & Serve

Allow to cool to a safe temperature. Offer 2–3 tablespoons to start. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 24 hours, or freeze in covered ice cube trays for up to 1 month.

Why Chicken Thigh at 7 Months?

By 6 months, the iron stores babies are born with begin to deplete. Meat is the most efficient way to replenish them — and chicken thigh's dark meat delivers more iron than breast with a richer, more satisfying flavour.

🩸
Heme Iron
Meat provides heme iron — the most bioavailable form, absorbed up to 3× more efficiently than plant-based iron. Critical for preventing iron-deficiency anaemia in the second half of infancy.
🛡️
Zinc
Supports immune function and healthy growth throughout infancy.
💪
Complete Protein
All essential amino acids for muscle growth and healthy weight gain.
Vitamin B6
Chicken is one of the richest food sources of B6 — essential for brain development, immune health, and protein metabolism during rapid growth.

Tips for Parents

First Meat Introduction

Offer chicken alone for 3–5 days before mixing with other new foods. Chicken allergy is uncommon, but introducing one new food at a time makes it easy to identify any reactions.

Hormone-Free Matters

iBuddies NZ chicken is raised without added hormones or growth promotants — important for babies whose hormone systems are still developing. New Zealand's strict farming standards ensure consistently clean poultry.

Storage

iBuddies chicken is vacuum-sealed for maximum freshness. Best consumed within 3 months frozen. Thaw overnight in the fridge — never refreeze thawed poultry.

No Salt

Never add salt or seasoning to baby food under 12 months. The natural umami of chicken and the sweetness of sweet potato is the only flavour your baby needs.
