Looking for a simple, wholesome baby snack? These banana oatmeal cookies need just four ingredients and have no added sugar — all the sweetness comes from a properly ripe banana. Mash the banana, stir through oats and egg, and bake until soft and golden. The texture is tender and easy to bite, just right for a 9-month-old to hold and eat. Easy to pop in your bag for outings and trips to the park — a real helper in the nappy bag.

Ingredients

  • Ripe banana1
  • Oats (quick or rolled oats)50g
  • Milk (formula, breastmilk, or whole milk for babies over 1 year)15g
  • Egg1

Method

  1. Preheat ovenPreheat your oven to 160°C (320°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper or lightly grease it with a little oil.
  2. Mix ingredientsIn a bowl, mash the ripe banana with a fork until it is a soft purée. Add the oats, milk and egg, and stir everything together until well combined.
  3. Shape cookiesSpoon small mounds of the mixture onto the prepared baking tray. You can flatten them slightly with the back of the spoon.
  4. BakePlace the tray in the preheated oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, until the cookies are baked through, set and lightly golden, centre no wet batter and the egg fully set.
  5. CoolLet the cookies cool completely on the tray before serving. They will be soft-baked.

Safety notes

  • Bake the egg fully — only serve once the cookies are baked through, set and dry, with no wet batter in the centre.
  • Allergens: gluten (oats), egg, milk; nuts if added. If this is a first introduction to oats, egg, milk or nuts, introduce one new food at a time and watch for 2–3 days.
  • No added salt, sugar or honey under 1. These cookies rely on the natural sweetness of ripe banana — no added sugar needed.
  • Milk choice: for babies under 1, use formula or breastmilk instead of whole milk; whole milk is suitable for 1y+ only.
  • Serve warm, cut to an easy-to-hold size, with baby seated and supervised.

Why it's great for baby

Banana brings natural sweetness, potassium and energy; once ripe it's easy to mash and gentle to digest, making it an ideal base for a baby snack. Oats are rich in dietary fibre and slow-release carbs to support digestion and keep baby satisfied. Egg adds protein and choline while helping bind and shape the cookies. Four simple ingredients, no added sugar, soft and easy to bite — perfect for baby to practise self-feeding.

Tips

Batch ahead: bake a few extra, cool and store in a sealed container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in the fridge for up to 4 days; warm through before serving for easy outings.

Vary the flavour: the banana is sweet enough on its own, but you can stir in a little unsweetened apple purée or cinnamon for variety (test any new ingredient on its own first). If baby has already tried nuts, add a little unsweetened nut butter.

Adjust texture by age: for younger babies, bake softer and cut into thin strips for easy gripping; for older babies, keep a little more texture to practise chewing.
