France Hormone-Free Duck Liver & Spinach Baby Congee (12m+)
Duck Liver & Spinach Baby Congee
In traditional Chinese baby-care wisdom, liver congee has long been a go-to meal for building blood and supporting healthy growth. Modern nutrition confirms what generations of Hong Kong parents already knew: liver is one of the most complete nutrient sources available for babies.
Pairing French duck liver with baby spinach doubles down on iron and adds Vitamin K and lutein for eye health. The silky rice congee base makes it soothing, easy to digest, and perfect for texture progression at 12 months.
Ingredients
Makes approx. 2 small baby servings. Serve liver no more than 1–2 times per week due to high Vitamin A content.
How to Make
Rinse white rice and add to a small pot with 300ml water. Bring to a boil, then reduce to the lowest heat setting. Simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rice breaks down into silky smooth congee.
Add the duck liver cube directly to the simmering congee. Cook for 8–10 minutes, using a spoon to gently break and stir the liver as it cooks, until fully cooked through with no pink remaining.
Add the chopped baby spinach to the pot. Stir and cook for a further 2 minutes until the spinach is completely wilted and tender. The congee will turn a beautiful, deep green.
For a smoother texture, briefly blend with a hand blender or mash well with a fork. Cool to a safe temperature. Serve 2–4 tablespoons. Refrigerate up to 24 hours or freeze for up to 1 month.
Why Duck Liver + Spinach?
This pairing is a blood-building powerhouse — two of the highest iron-density foods available for babies, combined in a single gentle meal. Traditional Chinese nutrition and modern science agree on its tonic value.
Tips for Parents
Liver is extraordinarily nutrient-dense — serve no more than 1–2 times per week. This ensures your baby receives all the benefits of its iron, Vitamin A, and B12 without exceeding safe upper intake levels for Vitamin A.
Baby spinach is softer and milder than mature spinach — better for young palates. Add it only in the final 2 minutes of cooking to preserve its Vitamin K and folate content.
Vacuum-sealed for freshness. Best consumed within 3 months frozen. Thaw in the fridge overnight before use. The 10g pack provides the ideal single-serving amount of liver for one full batch of congee.
Even at 12 months, keep salt minimal. Duck liver and spinach have naturally deep, complex flavours — this congee needs no seasoning to be delicious and nourishing.
