How to Make

Cook Soft Rice

Rinse rice and simmer in 400ml water over low heat for 20 minutes, stirring often, until the rice is very soft with a creamy, porridge-like consistency.

Add Mushroom

Stir finely chopped mushroom into the rice and simmer for a further 3–4 minutes until mushroom is completely soft and has released its natural umami into the rice.

Steam Quail

Steam quail breast separately for 15–18 minutes until fully cooked. Shred finely or dice small — the pieces can be slightly larger at 10 months to encourage chewing.

Combine & Serve

Stir shredded quail into the mushroom rice. Cool to a safe temperature and serve warm. Freeze leftovers in a covered container for up to 1 month.

Mushroom Preparation

Remove and discard the stems of shiitake mushrooms — they can be tough even when cooked. Use only the caps, chopped very finely so they cook quickly and blend seamlessly into the rice.

At 10 months, leave the rice with a soft but chunky texture — not blended smooth. Small soft pieces help babies practise moving food around their mouths and build gum strength.

Storage
