Baby Gyoza (9m+)
Baby Gyoza
Homemade soft wrappers × ground beef filling — one bite each, just right for little hands to grab, and a fun fold-and-eat for the whole family 🥟
Once baby is past 9 months and chewing is starting to come along, gyoza make a playful, nourishing finger food. These baby gyoza use soft, homemade wrappers folded around tender Australia Grass-Fed Beef Tenderloin and diced onion — one bite each, just right for little hands to grab and self-feed. Best of all, the whole family can sit and fold together: season the adults' portion, keep baby's plain — a true share-with-the-family meal.
Ingredients
- Plain (all-purpose) flour26 g
- Water or juice (carrot or mango juice works great; this amount makes about 6)13 g
- Starch (for dusting the wrappers so they don't stick)as needed
- Diced onion + Australia Grass-Fed Beef TenderloinShop ↗, ground + starchas needed
- Chopped corn + ground pork + starchas needed
Method
- Make the doughMix the flour with the water (or carrot / mango juice) and knead into a smooth dough. If you have time, let it rest for about 1 hour so the wrappers roll out more easily.
- Make the wrappersRoll the dough super thin. Cut out circles using a round cutter (or any suitably shaped bowl or cup at home); the scraps can be re-rolled. Dust each wrapper with starch so they don't stick.
- FillMix your chosen filling — for example diced onion + ground beef tenderloin + starch. Place in the centre of a wrapper, fold over and pinch firmly to seal.
- Cook throughSteam or blanch the gyoza. The meat filling must be cooked through, no pink, juices run clear, and the wrappers must be fully cooked, not doughy. Lift out and they're done! Cool until just warm before serving to baby.
Safety notes
- The meat filling must be fully cooked — beef or pork cooked through, no pink, juices run clear; the wrappers must be cooked through too, not doughy.
- Allergen: wheat (gluten); also contains egg only if your filling adds egg. When introducing a new food, offer one at a time and watch for 2–3 days for any reaction.
- No added salt, sugar or honey under 1. The filling relies on the natural sweetness of the meat and onion — no seasoning needed.
- Keep seasoning for adults / 1y+: dip in soy sauce, add salt or other seasoning only on the adults' portion; keep baby's plain.
- Gyoza have some size to them and a whole one is a choking hazard for a small baby — cut into small pieces before serving and cool until just warm; baby should be seated upright and supervised while eating.
Why it's great for baby
Australia Grass-Fed Beef Tenderloin provides easily absorbed haem iron and quality protein — a great source as baby's iron needs rise from 6 months. Onion turns sweet and soft once cooked, easy to bite and adding savoury depth to the filling, while the homemade wrappers are soft and chewable, perfect for baby to practise gripping and chewing. One little gyoza delivers iron, protein and carbs in a single bite — and the whole family can fold them together, making it a fun, share-with-adults meal.
Tips
Fold once, eat over several days: lay the raw gyoza flat and freeze so they don't stick together, then steam straight from frozen whenever you need a quick bite.
Share with adults: after setting aside baby's portion, adults can dip theirs in soy sauce, add chilli or seasoning — one batch, two ways to enjoy.
Adjust texture by age: for younger babies, chop the filling finer and cut the gyoza into small pieces; for older ones, leave a whole gyoza to practise the palmar grasp.
