Japan Matsuba Crab Claw & Broccoli Soft Rice for Babies (12m+)
Matsuba Crab & Broccoli Soft Rice
Crab is a shellfish and a common food allergen. Introduce separately for the first time, offer a small amount, and observe for 3 days before introducing other new foods. Watch for signs of allergic reaction. If your baby has a family history of shellfish allergy, consult your paediatrician first.
By 12 months, babies are ready for more texture and variety in their meals. Soft rice — rice cooked until it absorbs most of its liquid and becomes tender but intact — introduces a new eating challenge that builds chewing skills and expands flavour awareness. Matsuba crab's extraordinary sweetness infuses every grain of rice, creating a genuinely gourmet meal for a growing palate.
Broccoli adds visual brightness, Vitamin C, and a gentle vegetal flavour that balances the crab's richness. Vitamin C also enhances iron absorption from the meal — a natural nutritional synergy that makes this combination as smart as it is delicious.
Ingredients
Makes approx. 1–2 baby servings. Do not freeze once crab is cooked — refrigerate and consume within 24 hours.
How to Make
Rinse rice and add to saucepan with 320ml water. Bring to simmer, cover, and cook on low heat for 20 minutes until the rice is soft, slightly sticky, and has absorbed most of the liquid.
Place crab claw and broccoli florets together in a steamer basket. Steam for 8–10 minutes. Extract crab meat carefully; check for shell fragments. Roughly chop broccoli into small pieces suitable for your baby's texture stage.
Stir crab meat and broccoli pieces into the soft rice. Mix gently — the natural crab sweetness seasons the entire bowl without any additional flavouring.
Cool to a safe temperature. Serve 3–4 tablespoons. Mash or blend to a finer texture if needed. Refrigerate up to 24 hours. Do not refreeze once crab is cooked.
Why Matsuba Crab + Broccoli Soft Rice?
Soft rice is a 12-month milestone — it introduces texture, builds chewing, and expands eating skills. Matsuba crab's extraordinary B12, zinc, and natural sweetness infuse every grain, while broccoli's Vitamin C enhances iron absorption and adds vibrant colour. A complete, gourmet meal in one bowl.
Tips for Parents
Shellfish is one of the most common food allergens. Introduce crab for the first time as a standalone meal. Give a small amount (1–2 teaspoons) and wait 3 full days before introducing any other new foods. Watch for hives, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. If your baby has a family history of seafood or shellfish allergy, consult your paediatrician before introducing.
After steaming and extracting the crab meat, carefully run your fingers through it before adding to rice. Crab claws can leave tiny shell shards — a 10-second check ensures complete safety. Even the smallest fragment is sharp, so be thorough.
Vacuum-sealed crab claw: best consumed within 3 months frozen. Thaw in the fridge overnight. Once cooked, do not refreeze this dish. Refrigerate and consume within 24 hours — crab texture deteriorates on refreezing and reheating.
Matsuba crab's natural sweetness and gentle salinity season this entire bowl perfectly. Broccoli adds its own green depth. No added salt, seasoning, or stock is required — this is a self-seasoned, naturally complete meal.
