Around 10 months, babies love picking up their own food and working it with their gums. These mini meatballs use AU Grass-Fed Beef Tenderloin Slice, finely minced, with carrot and courgette grated and hidden right inside, then rolled small and steamed until tender — savoury beef, a little sweetness from the veg, and plenty of iron for growing bodies. They stay soft so they're easy to grip and gum, and the grown-ups can share them too: set aside baby's portion first, then serve yours with a dip at the table — one batch, two ways.

Ingredients

Main
  • AU Grass-Fed Beef Tenderloin SliceShop ↗ (3 packs, any sinew removed, finely minced)~105 g
  • Carrot (finely grated — hidden veg)2 tbsp
  • Courgette / zucchini (finely grated and squeezed dry — hidden veg)2 tbsp
Bind & aroma
  • Egg (small, lightly beaten, helps it bind)1
  • Fine breadcrumbs or oat flour (to firm up the mix)2 tbsp
  • Grated onion or garlic (optional, for aroma)a little
  • Olive oil (for cooking)a little
  • Mild dip or tomato sauce (optional, for adults / 1y+ at the table)to serve

Method

  1. Mince the beefTrim away any sinew, then mince or finely chop the beef tenderloin until smooth and soft — the finer it is, the easier it is for baby to chew and swallow.
  2. Prep the hidden veggiesFinely grate the carrot and courgette, then squeeze out the excess water so the mix isn't too wet and the meatballs hold their shape.
  3. CombineMix the minced beef, grated vegetables, egg, breadcrumbs and optional grated onion until evenly combined and sticky enough to hold together.
  4. RollWith lightly wet hands, roll into small meatballs about 2 cm across — finger or one-bite size, soft enough to squash between your fingers, perfect for little hands to grip.
  5. Steam throughSteam for about 10–12 minutes until cooked all the way through — no pink in the centre, juices run clear, and the egg is fully set. Never leave them underdone.
  6. Pan-finish (optional)For a little aroma, roll the cooked meatballs briefly in a touch of olive oil over gentle heat until lightly golden — keeping them cooked through and still soft, not dry.
  7. Cool & serveLet cool to just warm before serving. Adults can dip theirs in a little sauce. Introduce one new food at a time so you can watch for any reaction.

Safety notes

  • Cook the beef and egg fully — meatballs cooked all the way through, no pink in the centre, juices run clear; egg fully set, never underdone.
  • Mince finely and keep them soft. Beef can be chewy — mince it very finely and keep the meatballs small and squashable so they're easy to gum and swallow.
  • Allergens: egg and gluten. If either is new, introduce one new food at a time and watch for 2–3 days for any reaction. Use oat flour for a wheat-free bind if you prefer.
  • No added salt, sugar or honey under 1. The beef and vegetables are naturally savoury, so no extra seasoning is needed.
  • Seasoning and dipping sauces are for adults / 1y+ only: after you've set aside baby's portion, the grown-ups' share can be salted or served with a dip at the table.
  • Mince everything soft, keep the meatballs finger or one-bite size, and serve warm — baby seated upright and supervised.

Why it's great for baby

AU Grass-Fed Beef Tenderloin is one of the best sources of well-absorbed heme iron, plus zinc and quality protein — exactly what babies need from around 6 months, when the iron they were born with starts to run low. Minced fine and rolled soft, it's easy to gum and swallow. With carrot and courgette grated and hidden right inside, every meatball sneaks in extra vitamins, moisture and colour. Rolled finger-size, they're just right for baby to hold and self-feed — great grip and chewing practice.

Tips

Batch & freeze: make a double batch, steam and cool, then freeze in portions. Reheat by steaming or in the microwave when you're short on time.

Share with the family: set aside baby's portion first, then simmer the grown-ups' share in a little tomato sauce or serve with a dip — one batch, two ways.

Texture by age: for younger babies, mince the beef finer and make the meatballs smaller and softer; for older babies, leave a few tiny veg pieces to practise chewing.
