Anything-Goes Steamed Cake

Swap the main ingredient however you like — banana, pumpkin or zucchini all work. Soft, easy to grip and sweet without any sugar 🧁

AGE
6m+
TIME
~30 min
YIELD
1 mould
ALLERGENS
Egg, Wheat (gluten)

Just started solids and looking for a simple, do-anything snack? This baby steamed cake needs only three things — your main ingredient, one egg and a little cake flour — and you can swap the main ingredient for banana, apple, pumpkin or zucchini for a new flavour every time. The texture is soft and naturally sweet, and cut into strips it becomes a baby-led-weaning finger food your little one can grip and practise chewing.

Ingredients

  • Main ingredient (use fruit or soft veg, e.g. banana, apple, pumpkin, zucchini)40g
  • Egg1
  • Cake flour (or low-protein all-purpose flour)15g
  • Cooking oil (to grease the mould)A little

Method

  1. BlendAdd the 40g of your chosen main ingredient and 1 egg to a baby food processor or blender. Blend in short bursts for a total of about 3 minutes, until frothy and completely smooth with no lumps.
  2. Fold in flourAdd 15g cake flour and fold gently — don't beat too vigorously, or you'll deflate the batter and the finished cake will lose its spring.
  3. Grease the mouldLightly grease a small steaming mould or heatproof ramekin so the cake releases easily.
  4. FillPour the batter into the mould. Cover, leaving a small gap or poking a tiny hole so steam can escape.
  5. SteamOnce the water is boiling, steam over medium heat for 15–20 minutes, until baked through, centre no wet batter, and the egg is fully set with no runny liquid. Let cool to just warm before serving to baby.

Safety notes

  • The egg must be fully cooked — steam for the full time until the centre is fully set with no runny liquid; never serve underdone.
  • Allergens: egg, wheat (gluten). If these are new, introduce one new food at a time and watch for 2–3 days for any reaction.
  • No added salt, sugar or honey under 1. Banana, pumpkin and similar main ingredients are already naturally sweet, so no extra sugar is needed.
  • If you'd like a little cinnamon or other sugar-free flavouring, keep it for the adults' or a 1y+ portion only.
  • Cut into easy-to-grip strips, serve warm, with baby seated and supervised.

Why it's great for baby

Egg brings quality protein and choline to support brain and body development; your fruit or veg main ingredient adds natural sweetness, fibre and vitamins so it tastes lovely without any sugar; and cake flour keeps the crumb soft and easy to eat. Cut into strips, it's a great helper for self-feeding practice, building little hands' grip and chewing skills.

Quality protein Naturally sweet Finger food Mix-and-match base

Tips

Make a batch: steam a few extra, cool, and keep sealed in the fridge for 2–3 days — just re-steam to warm before serving. Handy for a quick breakfast or an out-and-about snack.

Switch the base by season: banana and apple in summer, pumpkin and sweet potato in autumn and winter — a new flavour each time, and more ingredients for baby to try.

Texture by age: for babies new to solids, cut into thin strips for easy gripping; for older babies, cut into small pieces to practise picking up with a spoon.
