By 10 months, babies are ready for more texture, more complex flavours, and bigger nutrition. This salmon broccoli congee is one of the most nourishing meals you can put in a baby bowl — silky rice base, flaked omega-3-rich salmon, and iron-loaded broccoli, all in one comforting dish.

Makes 2–3 baby servings. Freeze extras in sealed containers for up to 1 month.

How to Make

1
Cook the Rice Base

Rinse 40g jasmine rice and add to a small pot with 400ml water and ginger slices. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat. Cover and simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rice breaks down into thick, creamy congee. Remove the ginger slices.

2
Steam Salmon & Broccoli

While the congee cooks, place the salmon fillet and broccoli florets in a steamer. Steam for 8–10 minutes until the salmon is fully cooked (opaque through) and broccoli is very soft.

3
Prepare the Toppings

Run your fingers over the salmon and remove all pin bones. Flake the salmon into small, baby-safe pieces. Finely chop or gently mash the steamed broccoli.

4
Combine & Serve

Stir salmon and broccoli into the congee. For 10m, mash slightly for a smoother finish. For 12m+, leave small soft chunks for oral motor practice. Cool to a safe temperature and serve warm.

Nutrition Highlights

This congee packs premium salmon protein alongside broccoli's iron and folate — a combination that's hard to find in other baby foods.

🧠
DHA & EPA
Wild salmon's signature omega-3s. Continue supporting brain development and visual sharpness well into toddlerhood.
🦴
Vitamin D
Bone strength and immune support.
🌿
Iron & Folate
Broccoli's standout contribution. Vitamin C in broccoli boosts iron absorption — a naturally smart pairing.
Carbohydrates
Sustained energy from jasmine rice all morning.

Tips for Parents

Shortcut

Use leftover plain rice from dinner — add directly to the pot and reduce simmering time to about 10 minutes.

Ginger Tip

Ginger is traditional in Cantonese baby food and gently neutralises any fishy smell. Always remove the slices before serving.

Texture Progression

At 10m, mash to a soft, lumpy porridge. By 12–15m, leave small soft chunks to encourage chewing development.

Freezing

Freeze cooled congee in silicone trays for up to 1 month. Reheat gently with a splash of water — always check temperature before serving.
