Once baby is past 9 months, you can add more fibre and nutrition to their staples. This loaf is built on whole wheat flour, with plain unsweetened Greek yogurt replacing part of the liquid — the yogurt keeps the dough soft and moist while adding calcium and protein, all with no added salt or sugar. Tear it into small strips for baby to practise self-feeding, while adults slice and spread — a high-fibre, nourishing everyday bread.

Ingredients

  • Whole wheat flour60g
  • Plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt (full-fat suitable for baby recommended)75g
  • Instant dry yeast (adjust to proofing quantity)~1–1.5g
  • Finely chopped dried fruit (optional)5–10g

Method

  1. MixIn a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, Greek yogurt and yeast. Mix until a slightly moist dough forms. If it feels too dry, add a little more yogurt; if too sticky, add a little more whole wheat flour — aim for a slightly tacky dough that isn't too dry or stiff. Add the optional dried fruit.
  2. First proof (bulk fermentation, refrigerated)Place the dough in a bowl and cover. Let it proof in a warm, draught-free place until roughly doubled, or refrigerate to ferment overnight (about 8–12 hours). A yogurt-based dough may take a little longer to proof.
  3. Shape, second proof & bakeGently punch the dough down to degas and shape it. Cover and let it proof again until clearly puffy (proofing time may vary for a yogurt dough). Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and bake for about 15–20 minutes, until the bread is baked through with no wet dough in the centre, the surface golden and the base sounds hollow when tapped. Let it cool completely or to just warm before serving baby.

Safety notes

  • Always bake until fully cooked through — no wet dough in the centre and the base sounds hollow when tapped; if the surface is golden but the centre is still wet, lower the oven temperature and bake a little longer. Never serve undercooked bread to baby.
  • Allergens: wheat (gluten), dairy; contains egg depending on the recipe. If this is a first introduction, offer just one new food at a time and watch for any reaction over the following 2–3 days.
  • No added salt, sugar or honey under 1. This dough itself has no added salt or sugar; choose plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt.
  • Keep spreads for the adults: the adult slice can take butter, jam or a little salt; keep baby's portion plain, and honey is only suitable for 1y+.
  • Chop dried fruit finely: any optional dried fruit must be chopped very fine to avoid a choking hazard. Tear into fine strips and serve just warm; keep baby seated upright and supervised while eating.

Why it's great for baby

Whole wheat flour keeps the bran, providing more dietary fibre and minerals than white flour to help baby's gut move along; plain unsweetened Greek yogurt keeps the dough soft and moist while adding calcium and protein to support bone and muscle development. With no added salt or sugar and simple ingredients, it's soft and easy to tear — perfect for a 9-month-old practising self-feeding and chewing.

Tips

Choose the right yogurt: use plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt (full-fat recommended) — avoid flavoured or sweetened versions to keep it free of added salt and sugar.

Share with adults: from the same batch, tear baby's portion into plain strips while adults slice and spread butter, jam or a little salt — the whole family enjoys it together.

Batch & store: make a few extra rolls at once, let them cool completely, then seal and keep in the fridge to eat within 2 days; they also freeze well — warm before serving and the texture stays soft.
