Steamed Veggie Pork Meatballs (Baby Version · 9 Months+)
Steamed Veggie Pork Meatballs (Baby Version)
Pork collar × two vegetables — steamed soft, tender and juicy. Iron for the brain, packed with nutrients, and great as finger food 🥢
Want baby to get a bite of meat and a bite of veg in one — without separate dishes? These steamed veggie pork meatballs use finely minced Canada Hormone-Free Pork Collar stirred with two grated vegetables, rolled into small meatballs and steamed. The pork collar keeps them soft, tender and juicy rather than dry. Rolled to a size baby can manage, they can even be picked up by little hands — iron for the brain, plus self-feeding practice.
Ingredients
- Canada Hormone-Free Pork CollarShop ↗ (visible fat and sinew removed, finely minced or ground)50g
- 2 types of your chosen vegetables (finely chopped, e.g. carrot, courgette)15g each
- Cornstarch (or potato starch)1/2 tsp
Method
- Prepare the vegetablesFirst, briefly boil the 2 chosen (and already chopped) vegetables until slightly softened. Drain well.
- Combine the meatball mixtureIn a medium bowl, combine the minced pork, the cooked and drained vegetables, and the cornstarch. Mix it all thoroughly with your hands or a spoon in one direction until the mixture is soft but still holds its shape. If it feels too dry, add a teaspoon of water.
- Form the meatballsLightly wet your hands to prevent sticking. Take small portions of the mixture (about 1 to 1.5 tablespoons) and roll them into small meatballs, approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. Aim for a size that is manageable for baby.
- Steam the meatballsArrange the meatballs on a heatproof plate, making sure they are not touching each other too much (leave a little space for even cooking). Set up your steamer, add water to the bottom pot and bring it to a boil. Cover and steam over medium-high heat for approximately 10–12 minutes, until the meatballs are firm and cooked through, no pink, juices run clear.
- Cool and serveCarefully remove the plate from the steamer. Let the meatballs cool to a safe temperature. Before feeding, cut them in half or quarters depending on baby's chewing ability. Serve as finger food or alongside soft cooked rice or congee.
Safety notes
- The pork meatballs must be fully cooked — cooked through, no pink, juices run clear. Never serve underdone.
- Allergens: no common allergens; if you use egg to help bind, it then contains egg. When introducing a new ingredient, introduce one new food at a time and watch for 2–3 days for any reaction.
- No added salt, sugar or honey under 1. The meat and vegetables already have natural savour — no need for added salt or soy sauce.
- Seasoning is for adults / 1y+ only: after dishing up baby's portion, the adults' portion can be seasoned with salt, soy sauce or a dip; any sauce is for 1 year and up.
- Halve the meatballs to avoid choking — cut them into fine, small pieces and serve warm. Keep baby seated and supervised while eating, and never serve a whole meatball.
Why it's great for baby
Pork collar is tender with light marbling and steams up soft, tender and juicy rather than dry, giving quality protein, zinc and haem iron — exactly what tops up baby's rising iron needs after 6 months to support growth and brain development; two vegetables add fibre, vitamins and natural sweetness. A bite of meat and a bite of veg in one — nutrient-packed and just right for little hands to grip.
Tips
Texture by age: for younger babies, mince the meat and grate the vegetables even finer, and roll the meatballs smaller, then halve; older babies can have a whole meatball halved to practise chewing.
Make ahead: roll a few extra at once; once steamed and cooled, portion and freeze, then reheat for a quick, wholesome meal on busy days.
Share with adults: after dishing up baby's portion, the adults' portion can be dipped in soy sauce or seasoned — one steamer, two meals.
