Pork tenderloin is the leanest and most tender cut of pork — making it the ideal first pork for babies as young as 7 months. With less fat than collar or rib, it steams quickly and blends to a completely smooth purée with no tough fibres, creating a texture babies can manage easily at this stage.

Butternut squash is a natural pairing — its natural sweetness balances the mild pork flavour, its deep orange colour indicates exceptional beta-carotene content, and its smooth texture blends into a silky, velvety purée babies consistently love. Together they deliver iron, complete protein, and vitamin A in one gentle bowl.

🎃
Butternut Squash
100g, peeled & diced
💧
Water (for steaming)
180ml
🍼
Breast Milk or Formula
1–2 tbsp, optional

Makes approx. 2–3 baby servings. Choose butternut squash with deep orange flesh for maximum beta-carotene.

How to Make

1
Steam

Place the pork tenderloin and butternut squash cubes in a steamer basket over boiling water. Steam for 18–20 minutes until the pork is cooked through and the squash is completely soft.

2
Check Pork

Remove pork. Confirm fully cooked with no pink. Slice at the thickest point to verify doneness. The tenderloin will be very tender — slice into pieces for blending.

3
Blend

Blend cooked pork and squash with 3–4 tablespoons of steaming liquid until completely smooth. Add breast milk or formula to reach the desired consistency for your baby's current weaning stage.

4
Cool & Serve

Cool to a safe temperature. Offer 2–3 tablespoons to start. Refrigerate for up to 24 hours, or freeze in ice cube trays for up to 1 month.

Why Pork Tenderloin + Butternut Squash?

Pork tenderloin is uniquely suited to the 7-month stage: the leanest cut blends smoother and digests more gently than fattier pork cuts. Butternut squash adds sweetness, vitamin A, and a naturally silky texture — creating a complete first protein meal that's both nutritious and genuinely appealing to young palates.

🥩
Leanest Pork Cut
Pork tenderloin has the lowest fat content of any pork cut. This makes it gentler on a developing digestive system, quicker to cook, and easier to blend into a completely smooth purée — ideal for babies at the beginning of their protein journey.
🎃
Beta-Carotene
The deep orange colour of butternut squash indicates high beta-carotene — which converts to Vitamin A to support vision, immune function, and healthy skin during rapid development.
🩸
Iron-Rich
Pork provides highly bioavailable heme iron — one of the most important nutrients at 7 months when maternal iron stores are declining. This purée helps fill that critical gap.
💪
Complete Protein
Pork tenderloin provides all essential amino acids needed for muscle development, tissue repair, and healthy growth — supporting a baby's rapid physical development during the first year of life.

Tips for Parents

Why Steam Instead of Boil

Steaming retains more nutrients than boiling — particularly the water-soluble vitamins in both the squash and pork. The steaming liquid collects in the bottom of your pot and makes an excellent blending liquid: use it first before adding breast milk.

Choose Deep Orange Squash

The deeper the orange colour of the flesh, the higher the beta-carotene content. When selecting butternut squash, look for a pale beige exterior with no green patches — that indicates full ripeness and maximum sweetness for your baby.

Storage

Vacuum-sealed for freshness. Best consumed within 3 months frozen. Thaw in the fridge overnight before use. This purée freezes very well — make a double batch and freeze in ice cube trays for easy weekday meals.

No Salt

Never add salt to baby food under 12 months. The natural sweetness of butternut squash and the mild flavour of pork tenderloin create a naturally delicious combination — babies at 7 months find this flavour profile incredibly appealing without any seasoning.
