Quail and goji berry is a classic Chinese tonic pairing — nourishing, warming, and deeply rooted in Cantonese tradition. Goji berries add a natural sweetness and a beautiful red-orange hue to the congee, along with antioxidants and gentle iron of their own.

This is the kind of recipe that grandparents will recognise and approve of — a Hong Kong baby bowl that bridges generations, made easy with pre-portioned French quail from iBuddies.

How to Make

1
Soak Goji Berries

Place dried goji berries in a small bowl with warm water and soak for 10 minutes until plump and soft. Drain and set aside — they'll stir into the congee beautifully.

2
Cook Congee

Rinse jasmine rice and simmer in 500ml water over low heat for 20–25 minutes, stirring often, until the rice breaks down into thick, creamy congee.

3
Steam Quail

Steam quail legs for 18 minutes until fully cooked. Carefully strip all meat from the small bones, shred finely, and discard all bones.

4
Combine & Serve

Stir quail meat and goji berries into the congee. Simmer for 2 more minutes. Cool to a safe temperature and serve warm. Freeze leftovers in a covered container for up to 1 month.

A Traditional Tonic, Modernised

Quail with goji has been used in Chinese medicine and home cooking for centuries to nourish blood, strengthen the body, and support eye health. For babies at 12 months, the science supports the tradition beautifully.

🩸
Blood-Nourishing Iron
Quail provides heme iron; goji berries add plant-based iron. Together they deliver a powerful combination for building healthy blood and preventing anaemia.
👁️
Eye Health
Goji berries are rich in zeaxanthin — a carotenoid that supports healthy retinal development in infancy.
🍚
Slow Energy
Creamy congee provides sustained energy release for an active, growing 12-month-old.
🌿
Antioxidants
Goji berries are one of the highest antioxidant foods by weight — protecting developing cells from oxidative stress during this critical growth phase.

Tips for Parents

Goji Softness Check

Soaked goji berries should be soft enough to squash easily between two fingers before adding to the congee. If still firm, soak a few more minutes. Any hard pieces can be a choking hazard.

Bone Check

Quail bones are very small. Always feel through the shredded meat with your fingertips before stirring into the congee — a quick, important check every time.

Goji Berry Source

Use plain, unsweetened dried goji berries — available at most Hong Kong wet markets and supermarkets. Avoid any goji products with added sugar or preservatives.

No Salt or Soy Sauce

The natural sweetness of goji berries and the savoury quail create all the flavour this congee needs. Do not add salt or soy sauce to baby food under 12 months.
